A night out without drinking
How to get through drinks, a meal or a party without alcohol: a line ready, a glass in hand, and what to do with pushback. Without justifying yourself.
The hard part of a night out without alcohol is rarely the craving itself: it’s other people’s eyes and the justifying. Two bits of prep remove most of the problem — a line ready and a glass in hand — and one simple rule handles the rest: you don’t owe anyone an explanation.
Keep a glass in hand #
A full glass of something you like (sparkling water, a soft drink, alcohol-free beer, juice) heads off most offers: no one offers a drink to someone already holding one. It’s a detail, but the most effective one. Arrive with it, refill early, keep it occupied.
Prepare a simple line #
Decide in advance what you’ll say, so you don’t improvise under pressure. “I’m not drinking tonight”, “I’m easing off at the moment”, “I’m driving”: a short line, no excuse, no debate. The key is not to open a negotiation — a brief, calm answer closes the subject better than a long explanation.
Facing pushback #
Insistence usually says more about the other person than about you. Repeat the same line, unchanged, without escalating into justification (“no thanks, I’m good”): the simplest and most robust technique. If the mood really weighs on you, letting yourself leave early is an option, not a failure.
Choose your nights at first #
Early on, some situations are harder than others. It’s perfectly fine to space out heavy-drinking contexts while new reflexes settle, then come back once the line and the glass-in-hand are automatic. That isn’t cutting yourself off: it’s choosing the order.
If alcohol is everywhere around you #
When nearly every occasion revolves around alcohol, telling one person you trust changes the equation. And if cutting down feels hard beyond nights out, see Cut down on drinking or contact a national alcohol support line [SOURCE À AJOUTER].
